The internet platform www.3d-geology.de is our contribution to the International Year of Planet Earth (IYPE). Major objective is the bundling of information and best praxis examples of modelling results in new fields of application. 3D-Modelling provides an essential input of knowledge to the subsurface and will be a future-oriented management tool of natural resources.
GIS4Geology - GIS for geological modelling approaches
GIS4Geology is an open-source QGIS plugin designed for the creation of geological 3d models via cross sections. It requires data such as a Digital Elevation Model (DEM), borehole data, and geological maps. This tool enables users a step-by-step solution of various tasks related to geological modeling. The constructive workflow allows for the generation of an initially empty cross section, which can be populated by digitization of lines. On top of ths complex database a geological volume model is generated, that can also be parameterized. This leads to numerical 3d models. The volume model is set up of octrees and can be visualized by the most recent scientific visualization tools.
